Working in New Spaces

Performing in unconventional spaces can often be just as rewarding as working in a purpose-built theatre.

We believe that theatre can be created at any time and in any place through the interaction between actors and audience and the experience is often more exciting when the setting contributes something new and unexpected to the action.

Community members collaborate with us to turn their village hall into a welcoming theatre space, hosting high quality professional performance. Past Chalkfoot performances have taken place in offices, churches, schools, heritage sites and community halls.

Chalkfoot's touring expertise means that our company of actors and stage managers can set up, perform and pack away within a matter of hours. Local residents often use our visits as an opportunity to fundraise, with profits from refreshments and raffles going directly to the parish hall amenities fund.

TOURING IN 2011

We are delighted to announce that Chalkfoot will be touring once again in Spring 2011 with funding from Kent County Council and Arts Council England. We have also received a small award from Swale Borough Council which will give us the opportunity to work with three community groups to develop a storyline for a play.

For our 2011 tour we plan to move away from literary adaptations and find our subject from within our own audience. Taking "A Sense of Place" as a starting point, we will work with local people to discover hidden stories - historical, mythological or current events (or a combination of any of those three!) - which reflect the culture and heritage of the place where they live.

We will then create a script based on the best story and ask the participants to give us feedback.

If you are a promoter, we will be offering you an opportunity to book in September 2010. If you are an audience member, then watch this space for information about the project as it develops.
